Holy Stone HS110D FPV Review

The Holy Stone HS110D FPV is a small drone. It does not need to be registered with the FAA and the best thing yet is that this drone makes it easy for you to take awesome photographs and videos of your family. Just one in a long line of impressive drones, does it meet the expectations of the user? Yes and no. Yes because when you buy it for hobbyist use, it will more than fulfill all of your needs. However, for professional use, this drone has its short flight time working against it. Is this truly the best drone under 200? You can explore the features in this Holy Stone HS110D review.

Holy Stone HS110D features and technical details

Starting with the physical features, this drone measures approximately 30 by 30 by 6 cm. That is small, unlike the preceding HS100, which was quite big. This small size makes this a very portable drone, and you do not need to register it with the FAA. Weighing only 108 grams, that is easy enough to carry around in a small carry case, when you want to go and fly it in the park. It is a spanking good-looking drone too, with its white rotors set against the black body.

A camera drone like this one sets store by the camera. This one can take nice HD videos at a resolution of 1280 by 720P. A 2MP camera takes high quality still photos. If you pair this drone with your smartphone, you will be able to stream video live. If you pair the drone with your smartphone, you will get a nice FPV – first person view so that you can see where the drone is going in real time. You will also be able to share your videos and photos in real time over your social media networks. With a wide angle of view at 120 degrees, this drone can see pretty well ahead and on the sides. To store all of your videos and photos before you can transfer them to other storage, the HS110D is sold with a 4GB microSD card.

This drone has different flight modes, but the one that you will find most exhilarating without doubt is the automatic altitude hold, which is activated as soon as you free the left joystick on the controller. The drone will hold the altitude at which you release the joystick, hovering and taking your pictures from all angles.

Even if this is one of the most affordable drones in the market, it still incorporates a return to home feature. This means that your drone will never be lost even when you are flying it in the park because when the battery drains to a certain percentage, it will automatically initiate return to the person holding the controller.

Advanced pilots will enjoy the four-speed choices as well as features like the headless mode, which lets the drone follow you without you having to worry where it is. Beginner pilots should love the one button take off and landings which actually make this drone to have the shortest learning curve in the market.

For the battery and flight time, the drone comes with one 3.7V 650mAh lithium polymer battery. It takes about 60 minutes to charge this battery to full, and the flight time is 7 to 9 minutes give or take a little. To increase your flight time, you can buy a second or even third battery. The flight range is about 120 meters and the video transmission range is 50 meters maximum.

For the best experience, fly this drone indoors. You can even fly it at night as it has guiding LED lights.

Short summary of feedback from existing owners

I bought this small drone for my son on his 16th birthday and so far I have been very pleased with it. It is not easy to please a teenager but this drone worked wonders. We fly it together in the yard. Ruby O.

I can only get 7 minutes out of the battery and please note, I do not do flips, nor do I fly this drone in windy conditions. I solved this by buying two extra batteries and keeping them charged all the time. I think it is the best drone under 200. Robert T.

Is it just me or does this drone heat up after flying for a full 9 minutes? I prefer to let it rest between flight times as I have a second battery. I have contacted the manufacturer about this but they have not gotten back to me. Tess B.

I bought this drone for one purpose only – to take family photos and videos when we go to the beach, for picnics and stuff. So far, it has been a doing a perfect job for me and I am very happy with. It will not take 4K videos and photos, but I knew that and I am pleased with what it can do. Rory L.

Short flight time – I can only coax 7 minutes out of the drone. I also find the app connection a bit woozy especially with distance. But then, it is small and affordable so I bet it would be unfair to expect the same features as I would get from the Holy Stone big boys. Allain N.

Beginner pilots will find this drone a marvel to own and fly. It is actually very good for learning to fly and then as you get more into it, you can get a bigger drone with more advanced features. However, that does not mean that this drone lacks some good advanced features for advanced pilots because it has. Therefore, anyone can buy this drone, but if you are a professional photographer/videographer, perhaps you had better look for another drone.

Conclusion and recommendation

Good camera for its price range, storage in a 4GB card that is provided, different flight modes like headless mode, FPV and altitude hold. Four speed choices and many more features …what is not to like about this drone? There is only one problem though – the short flight time that you will get out of the battery. However, there is a way around that, just buy a second, or even a third battery. If you are looking for the best drone under 200, the HS110 FPV is your baby.
