Getting started in FPV flying is not easy. Choosing the right drone for the job is paramount. The DJI Avata Pro-View Combo with Goggles seems like a good fit. It is expensive, but many who have tried it say it is worth it. We shall look into the features to see whether it really is.
This drone is known for the high quality video feed that you are going to get through the goggles it comes with. Besides these goggles are more advanced, smaller and they give excellent picture quality.
Like every other FPV drone, this one too has its fair share of troubles. One of them is the high cost. This drone is expensive!
If you wear glasses, you will have trouble wearing the redesigned and smaller goggles this drone comes with are not too friendly to glasses wearers. Another thing you might have issues with is the hard to reach SD card placement.
Also, the batteries may not give you as much flight time as is advertised. DJI says you will get 18 minutes out of a full charge, but realistically, most people get about 15 minutes, sometimes shorter than that.
DJI Avata Pro-View Combo Features
If this is the first time that you are reading about an FPV drone, well, you may wonder what it is. After all, in the DJI Mavic Mini and other drones we reviewed in the past, you will see we said they give you a first person view.
However, with a full-fledged FPV drone, it allows you to fly it from the perspective of an aircraft pilot, as if you are inside the drone.
With the other traditional drones, you only get your FPV from your smartphone. The real FPV drone like the DJI Avata is different, more feature-rich and enjoyable. But first, see its features.
DJI Avata design and build quality
You can take the small, lightweight and adventurous drone that you can take with you, and fly it anywhere. It is the size of your palm so it is easy to put in your jacket pocket when you are going to the beach or to the park.
Precisely, it measures 7 inches by 7 inches and only 3.1 inches high. The weight of the drone is 410g, so you will have to register it with the FAA before you can fly it.
For safety and protection, the drone has integrated propeller guards. If you are a beginner, you will appreciate this ideal feature a lot because there will be a few crashes. Your blades will come out intact.
DJI is known for using high quality plastic (mostly ABS) material for their aircrafts. Even this one comes with just about the same quality. It will not rip open if it drops on the floor.
In the package they ship to you, you will find the drone itself, Goggles 2, eyeglass frames (two of them), OTG cable for the goggles, power adapter, dual band antenna for the goggles 2, power cable, and batteries for the drone and the Goggles 2.
This is the whole objective behind getting this aircraft. The camera is built-in, and it has a wide angle of view at 155 degrees.
This camera sits on an integrated gimbal, which corrects any vibrations, shaking and even slanting of the drone ensuring the same does not appear in the footage.
When you are flying the drone in the wind, the gimbal will maintain the quality of the footage. Please note that this is 1-axis gimbal, so lower your expectations a bit.
The camera can capture 4K videos if you shoot at 60 frames per second. It can also get good 1080P videos when you are capturing them at 100 frames per second.
Even with all of these, it is best to capture your videos during the day in natural lighting or in a place with very good lighting at night. If not, your footage will be a bit grainy.
The video transmission distance is 10 KM but this drone can mostly do 500 meters in a clear space without obstacles.
Hand in hand with the camera is the Goggles 2, which is cute and smaller. The only downside to the Goggles 2 is that they are not good for people who wear glasses.
They won’t fit. Unfortunately, you cannot fly this drone without the Goggles.
This aircraft is also compatible with DJI FPV Remote Control 2, Goggles V2, DJI FPV Goggles V2 and the DJI Motion Control.
The motion controller gives you more flexibility when flying this aircraft. It also makes the flying experience richer and more incredible.
The DJI Goggles 2 has a weight of 290g, inclusive of the battery. Therefore, they will take some getting used to, but the experience you will get is worth this little trouble.
These goggles have some degree of adjustability, starting with the distance between the eyeglasses. You can also adjust them for long or short sightedness.
Battery and flight time
This drone comes with one, 2450mAh Lithium-ion battery, which DJI says is going to give you 18 minutes of flight time. This is not correct actually, as most people report getting 13 minutes out of their battery.
However, you can order two more batteries and a charging kit from DJI. This is going to cost you about $279, but it’s a good deal.
The battery charges fast though in 45 minutes. It is also safe to handle with built-in overcharge protection.
Emergency air brake
If an obstacle suddenly appears in the flight path of the DJI Avata, just use the emergency brake to stop it in its tracks immediately. This averts many crashes and it will make the drone last longer. At well over a thousand bucks, you really could appreciate all the features you can get.
Motion controller and how it works
The motion controller is part of the package that you will get when you order the DJI Avata Pro-View, so it does not cost extra.
So what is it and how will you use it? It is like a joystick, which is light in weight and you can use it for fun flights.
If you point it downwards, the aircraft dives. If you point it upwards, the aircraft ascends. If you tip it sideways, the drone flies in that direction and vice versa. It also has a trigger, for accelerating the horizontal speed of the drone.
This drone is designed to introduce you to aerial shooting and it will do just that so well. To store your footage, it comes with 20GB worth of onboard storage.
That’s not much for unedited videos, so you will want to get an SD card. The SD card slot is located beneath the drone, in a place that’s a bit of a challenge to access, but it is what it is.
Testimonials from DJI Avata Pro-View Owners
I feel the price is too steep for an FPV drone but if you love flying, you are going to love the intense first person experience. Tried the Motion Controller too and it is marvelous. Shawn Hill.
I was wondering whether there is a way to buy the drone without the motion controller but DJI told me this one comes with it. It seems there is no way to save money on the combo package. Great experience though and a nimble flying experience. Benjamin Harden
I think I am going to keep my Avata for a long time. It is a bit slower but so easy to control and navigate through tight spaces. It gave me a good learning experience and if I need to upgrade in future, I will. Allan Moss.
You had better learn how to set certain things in the goggles. Adjust the vision using the focus knob. If you do not set it right, you are going to experience blurry vision, which might affect how you control the aircraft. Aron Beckler.
Good drone, I will give it that. However, the important accessories are quite expensive. Imagine having to pay close to $300 for two spare batteries and their charger. If you want the DJI FPV Remote Control 2, you will have to chuck out a hefty $250. Byron Nuttall.
