DJI Mavic 3 Review

DJI Mavic 3

In their description for the DJI Mavic 3, they use this line – Imaging Above Everything. The inclusion of a Hasselblad 4/3 CMOS camera backs this claim.

Hasselblad is the leader in digital cameras and lenses. Thus, if aerial shooting is your thing, you should get the Mavic 3.

The Mavic 3 comes in three packages. First, there is the DJI Mavic 3, which we are reviewing here.

The second package is the Mavic 3 Fly More Combo, which is costlier by several hundreds of dollars. It comes with three batteries, a convertible bag, filters set and a charging hub.

The third one is the Cine Premium Combo, which comes with all the things that the Fly Combo comes with. It also has extras such as built-in storage of up to 1TB SSD and Apple ProRes 422 HQ recording.

This one is costly at $2800 more than the Mavic 3, but many people agree that the features and functions justify the price.

Back to our Mavic 3 review, what are some of the downsides that you should know? One of them is the cost! The features notwithstanding, the price is simply too steep for many drone enthusiasts.

The second downside is that while this drone has so many advanced features, most of them are locked, so they will be activated in future. This means you cannot use them right now.

DJI Mavic 3 Features & Technical Details

No drone is too expensive if it has the features, flight functions and performance to back it up. The Mavic 3 has many incredible features that are functioning right now and in future, more will be unlocked.

The Mavic 3 package comes with:

  • The Mavic 3 drone
  • 1 Smart battery
  • 1 RC-N1 Transmitter
  • 3 RC-N1 charging cable
  • 1 battery charger
  • 3 pairs of propellers
  • 1 storage cover

 Size, design and build quality

This is a small, foldable drone. Folded dimensions are 8.7 by 3.8 by 3.6 inches. The unfolded dimensions are 13.7 by 11.2 by 4.3 inches. It weighs 895 grams. Thus, you will have to register it with the FAA in the USA before you can fly it since it is heavier than 250 grams. DJI makes their drones very well so your durability concerns are taken care of.

The motors are brushless. They do not consume too much power and they have a low noise level.

Camera Quality

This drone comes with a 4/3 CMOS camera made by Hasselblad which takes professional quality footage.

Put simply, this sensor captures incredible and very realistic details in your footage. With 5.1K Video resolution, you can use the footage that you capture without editing or filtering (unless you want to).

The camera’s aperture is so widely adjustable to capture high quality footage in all situations. For instance, in low light conditions, the aperture opens wider to allow in more light. In brighter lighting, the aperture can adjust so that it captures more natural footage and at lower shutter speed.

The Hasselblad camera is also equipped with the advanced Vision Detection Auto Focus (VDAF) technology. What this one does is that it uses several vision sensors to calculate the focusing speed depending on the distance of the object.

You will also enjoy high quality live feed at 60FPS/1080P. This gives you a more immersive first person view experience as your drone flies over different terrains. The long distance live feed transmission range can enable you to put this drone to many uses such as inspecting a far corner of your farm.

There is a second camera too that can record 4K footage at 30 FPS. It has a 12MP camera. When you take videos with it, it will be without the ProRes support.

You can store footage in the drone’s internal storage, which is 8GB. You can transfer the footage to your computer when full.

Battery and flight time

The Mavic 3 comes with one battery. The high capacity LiPo 4S 5000mAh battery can give an overall flight time of 46 minutes. The hovering time is 40 minutes and when you fly the drone in windy conditions, it can do up to 30 minutes.

You can also order an extra battery for a couple hundred of dollars to have more than 90 minutes of flight time.

This four-cell battery weighs 335g and goes into the drone’s body. You can also charge the battery using the charging dock or the cable alone.

Mavic 3 Transmitter

The remote controller comes with a rechargeable battery that can outlast a few drone batteries. It also comes with a solid build quality, is quite refined in design since it is not too cluttered on the interface. At the same time, it comes with keys for different functions that the drone features.

The overall control range of this remote controller is 15KM. Of course, you cannot fly the drone that far since it is against the FAA regulations.

Flight Functions

This drone is packed with many smart flight functions. They include the following:

Omnidirectional obstacle sensing

The Mavic 3 drone can sense and evade obstacles from underneath, in front, behind and sidewards, hence the term omni-directional. For this reason, this is one of the safest quadcopters to fly since it cannot crash easily.

Smart return to home

This drone’s return to home is not only automatic, but it also figures out the best, shortest and most optimized route to get back to you. This can save battery power a great deal. It is one of the best safety functions in drones.

DJI Mavic 3 Safety Features

Ocusync 3 transmission system

This is the most advanced drone transmission system in the market. Thus, even when it flies to the maximum flight distance, the drone is going to transmit high quality footage with a resolution of 1080P.

GPS and GLONASS Support

The Mavic 3 is able to receive signals from three outfits, which are GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou satellites. This helps in enhancing optical positioning and enables the drone to hover steadily without drifting at all.

This drone is also equipped with AirSense, which captures a signal that in turn triggers a warning of any small planes and helicopters that could be nearby.

MasterShots

DJI introduced this feature with the Mavic Air 2S. It enables the user to stitch different clips together and even add a soundtrack to the footage. You can create Mastershots in a few minutes using the in-app function designed for just this. When done, you can share the videos with family and friends on social media, in the app.

Panorama Mode

When you capture footage in this mode, the drone blends the clips automatically without your input. This enables you to share footage fast since there is no need for post-production editing.

QuickTransfer Function

With this function, you can transfer footage from the drone to your mobile phone over the Wi-Fi 6 Protocol. You will not even need to connect the smartphone to the transmitter to do this transfer.

Short Summary of Feedback from Existing Owners

The kind of footage that this drone captures will blow your mind away. However, unless you are a professional YouTuber, Videographer or photographer, this camera system is simply too advanced. Gerald G.

This drone can fly really high, for up to 4 miles high and up to 10 miles horizontally. The camera system is incredible but the MasterShots function is not unlocked yet. Hopefully, it will soon be active. Allan N.

I am so impressed by the smart return to home function. Imagine a drone calculating the wind speed and optimizing its back to home flight. It is incredible! Henderson W.

This is a small drone, but it feels heavy and does not look or feel like a toy at all. It is a drone for professionals. Felix O.

The convertible bag works like a marvel. First, it fits everything and secondly, it converts into a carry bag. It looks expensive and it is designed very well. Henry M.

The three-axis gimbal keeps the camera very stable even during flights. The zoom seems to make the pictures slightly blurry but not something that a casual user would notice. Gendy W.

Compared to the Mavic Air 2S, the Mavic 3 comes with many extras. If you are looking for a good prosumer drone, the Mavic 3 series will meet your needs perfectly.

Conclusion and Recommendation

This is an advanced drone. Before you use it, you should read the user manual carefully. Also, do not be tempted to fly your DJI Mavic 3 the entire flight distance because it is too long.

Regulations only allow you to fly drones to only as far as the reach of your sight. Even though it has good wind resistance, it is best to take your first maiden flight when the weather is calm and in a large and open space.

Also, find out the regulations that guide drone usage in your country.
