DJI Mini 2 Review

DJI Mini 2

DJI is one of the most popular brand names in the drone industry. They have something for everyone and for every budget. Released to the market on 2 November 2020, the DJI Mini 2 comes 12 months after the DJI Mini, which was released into the market on 30 October 2019.

Like many drone enthusiasts, you must be eager to know what is new in the Mini 2. But first, have you used the Mini? If not, you can read our review for DJI Mini, which we published sometime in the past.

In spite of the great DJI name, you still do not want to purchase your quadcopter blindly. You want to know its features and technical details. You also want to know how many flight functions it has. Keep reading so that you can see more details about the Mini 2.

Even before we get to the features, some of the things that have been improved include the flight performance, reception, it has forward and downward sensors, maximum wind resistance is better, ascent and forward speeds are also better.

However, the most notable improvements are in the video resolution because you can capture 4K videos with the Mini 2. With the Mavic Mini, you could only capture 2.7K videos.

DJI Mini 2 Features & Technical Details

Let us start with the size of the Mini 2. This is a pocket drone and no gigs about it because well… it fits into your pants pocket when folded. When expanded for flight, it measures 6.3 by 8.0 by 2.2 inches. When you fold it, the size reduces considerably to 5.4 by 3.2 by 2.3 inches. You can indeed see that it will fit into your pants pocket.

The weight of the drone is just one gram shy of the FAA registration threshold, which is 250g. Therefore, you need not register it. For carrying the drone, the weight is also not going to pull your pants down when you carry it in the pocket.

Does the Mini 2 have brushless motors? Yes indeed. They are tiny, but they are very powerful. They give the drone a longer flight time, they are quieter and they require just minimal care and maintenance.

The fuselage is made with high quality material for protecting the internal electronics. It will not rip apart when it crashes or drops; but all the same, do take good care of it.

There are so many other things to look forward to in this small aircraft. Keep reading to see its camera quality.

DJI Mini 2 Camera Quality

First, this quadcopter camera has a 3-axis gimbal. This gimbal is motorized, so no matter which way the drone slants when in flight, the camera stays smooth and captures distortion-free photos and videos. Even if your piloting gets a bit rough in the wind and so on, the gimbal keeps footage steady all the time.

The camera has 4K resolution, so the photos and videos are high quality. However, ensure that you take them at low speed and low height.

We must mention the OCUSYNC 2.0 transmission, which means that the quadcopter actually supports camera transmission range of up to 10KM. Therefore, if space and time allows, you can fly this drone to a range of 10KM. Of course, it is not advisable to fly a drone out of your sight, but long flight range always comes in handy.

This camera also has a digital zoom. You can bring images closer. This is a 4x zoom, and professional photographers find it very helpful.

To conclude this section, the still photos are in DNG and JPEG quality. In addition, this quadcopter can support SD cards of up to 256GB, which should be enough to store all of your videos and photos before you can transfer them to your computer.

Battery and Flight Time

You get a 2250mAh Lipo 2S battery with this drone, which can give you a flight time of 31 minutes. This is a minute longer than you get with the Mavic Mini.

However, you will notice that this battery charges in the drone, that is, unless you buy the Fly More Kit, which costs more than the regular package. However, when the battery charges in the drone, it fills up fast in about 2.5 hours.

If you would like to charge the battery outside the drone, the Fly More Kit has a charging hub. With this hub, you can actually use a spare battery (when you can buy one) while the first one charges outside the quadcopter.

This is not a regular “smart” battery as we know them. Rather, there are 4 LEDs on the remote controller that indicate the remaining battery voltage. However, it is smaller than with the Mavic Mini One because it weighs 86g, from 100g.

Remote Controller and Control Range

This remote controller has a long control range of 10KM, quite an improvement from the 4KM range of the Mavic Mini.

For your FPV- First Person View, you have to use your smartphone. The transmitter has a spring-loaded retractable smartphone holder that can fit devices of up to 90mm width, which is basically all of the latest smartphones in the market.

This remote controller comes with a rechargeable battery, which you can remove from the controller. This is a high capacity 5200mAh battery. With such power, you can fly the drone through three or more batteries.

Another benefit that you get from this controller is that the smartphone holder is located at the top. This means that when in use, you don’t have to move your eyes too far from the remote controller as you control your smartphone.

Even when you fly your drone further than the required 500 meters, the dual band technology courtesy of OCUSYNC is going to keep the drone well connected to the remote controller.

Flight Functions

The DJI Mini 2 is a simple drone to fly for both beginners as well as advanced users. It has several functions that can help towards that, and they are as follows:

Level 5 Wind Resistance

With this level of wind resistance, the drone can fly well in a wind that is slightly stronger than a breeze. Combined with a maximum altitude of 4000 meters, the DJI Mini 2 has a lot to offer anyone for adventure flying.

Automatic return to home

All DJI drones come with the auto return home feature to prevent it from getting lost. You have seen that the Mini 2 can do a serious flight range such that it can fly out of your sight. Therefore, having an automatic return home function is very helpful because the drone will return home if the battery runs low or the signal fails.

This drone also has smart return to home function. You can press the return to home key and it will come back home.

QUICKSHOTS

This is a very helpful function for taking pictures and videos. With this function engaged, you can tap to shoot images and videos and then share them on social media immediately, on the app. In addition, you can also add soundtracks to your videos and make them more interesting. You can also use filters and effects on your photos to make them incredible.

Also, something that you should note about the video and photo quality is that when you store your footage in an SD card, you can do high resolution. However, when you store them in your smartphone, they will be stored in 720P resolution.

Precision Flight

Thanks to wind resistance, high quality software and flight system, this quadcopter can fly precisely even in the wind. It responds well when trimming it. We feel that precision flight is better than a function like headless mode because it helps a beginner fly their aircraft where they want it.

You will realize that this quadcopter comes with fewer flight functions unlike what we have seen with other smaller drones. However, that does not mean that it is any different because it is not.

Short Summary of Feedback from Existing Owners

I paid for the drone plus the Fly More Kit and I am so glad I did because I have been having crazy fun all along. I am wary about letting the aircraft out of my sight though. Jay T.

This is one of the smallest quadcopters in the market and yet it is fast and has such a long flight range. Thanks to the Ocusync dual connection, it stays connected even over long distances. Bamsi N.

I am planning to use this drone to capture footage for my YouTube Channel. I love that I can add sound and even filter effects to videos and photographs. Kate D.

This drone flies incredibly well, far and high if you have the courage to let it out of your sight. I bought one without the charging hub but I intend to order one later when there are spare batteries. Richie R.

What an upgrade for me and other people who bought the Mavic Mini. The upgrades are great, starting with the 3-axis gimbal which is better than the 2-axis one that came with the Mini. Henry W.

You will not go wrong with the DJI Mini 2. It will cost you a good sum of money, but the flight performance and the stunning camera more than make up for that. Sam C.

Who Should Buy The DJI Mini 2?

Because of the price, this is not something that you really want to buy for your kids or even for yourself if you are a total beginner. It may be small and pocket size, but it offers incredible performance, distance, connectivity and other features. Therefore, this is a good match for a traveler or a person who does not fear testing limits and adventure flights.
If you need drone for filmimg sport (cycling / Surfing / Snowboarding…) and the ActiveTrack / Follow Me function is important for you – consider buying the Mavic Air 2.

Conclusion and Recommendation

When you get the DJI Mini 2 drone, the first thing you should do is to read the user manual. That way, you can know what to expect.

Choose a good place to fly the Mini 2. This should be a large open space, which will help when you have to bring the drone home because it can crash into obstacles in its path.

When the package is delivered, make sure it has the drone itself, remote controller, drone battery, Type C cable for charging, 1 gimbal protector, screw, screwdriver, 2 spare propellers, RC cable/micro USB connector, RC Cable/lightning connector, RC Cable/USB-C connector and 6 spare screws.
