Yuneec Mantis Q Review

Yuneec Mantis Q

Compact-sized, folding drones are becoming quite the norm nowadays. To such a category belongs the Yuneec Mantis Q, an incredibly well designed drone that you will fall in love with, and probably never find the need to upgrade to a bigger one.

Just to give you a sneak peek into the types of specs and features that you can find in this wonderful specimen, how does a 4K camera grab you? Ok, this is pretty much the standard nowadays in drones of this price range, but the build of this drone is high quality.

The design is ruggedly handsome, the app is good and the remote control is also quite compact. In the section below, we are going to look at the technical features of the Mantis Q in detail.

Yuneec Mantis Q

Yuneec Mantis Q Features & Technical Details

Physical features

The Mantis Q is not a big drone. It measures 6.6 by 3.9 by 2.2 inches when folded, making it a very portable drone. It also does not weigh much. It has been rated at 1 pound only. The matte-black finish is quite good too, especially as it will not reflect sunshine as gloss finishing would. If you love a small, aggressive-looking drone, this is it for you. The four arms fold backwards making the drone quite safe and easy to travel with.

The camera

This is where the Mantis Q really starts to get interesting. You will get 4K videos and high quality photos saved in JPEG or DNG format. The 12MP lens is something to be excited about. The 4K videos are quite stunning, even when you take them when the drone is flying at top speed.

You can store the video and photo footages in an SD card and you may share them instantly with your friends and family on social media networks. In the app, you will find the Instant Share feature. Use it to immediately share the videos and photographs with your followers.

The Mantis Q camera is in-built, fully integrated in the drone. It is not removable. However, the soft-mount 2-axis gimbal absorbs some of the vibrations, thereby keeping the video and photo quality as high as possible.

The camera is tiltable for up to 90 degrees even when your drone is in mid-flight.

Adjustable geo-fence

When you geo-fence a drone, you put restrictions in place so that the drone does not venture outside a certain perimeter. This is very important when you live near restricted places like military establishments and air spaces. You can create a geo fence around your drone, even for your neighbor’s backyard so that it never goes there.

Voice control

Read any Yuneec Mantis Q review and you will see how big a feature voice control is. It does not matter what you want the drone to do because short of packing itself into its carry bag, it will do everything. You can tell it to Wake Up, Return Home, Come Back, Start Landing, Start Recording and many others.  You will find all of these voice commands in the app. However, the same are also fund on the remote control if you would like to fly the drone manually instead of using voice commands.

Face recognition

This is one of the best features for people that love taking “selfie” photographs. What happens is that when the drone recognizes your face, it will stop about 13 feet from you and start taking photographs or recording a video at that level. You may also set the drone in gesture control mode where you just wave and the Mantis Q starts taking your photographs.

High-speed flying

Why should you fly slow when you can do 44 miles per hour/72km/h of crazy fun and still take awesome video footage? Not many drones are able to do a speed like this one. You may be worried about the latency (delay in transfer) of photos from drone to your smartphone, but it is not too much, at 200 ms.

Remote control

Just as compact as the drone is, so is the remote control. It looks incredibly solid, has many icons and commands and even without the app, you can fly the drone very well, but you will not enjoy FPV mode. The remote controller comes with a rechargeable 3000mAh battery, and a USB cable for connecting your smartphone and another one for charging.

Battery and flight time

The Yuneec Mantis Q foldable drone uses a Li-Po 2800mAh battery. It can do a flight time of 33 minutes tops. The battery is removable, so you can always order a spare one so that you double your flight time.

Short Summary of Feedback from Existing Owners

Many drones have been made for this price range but the Yuneec Mantis Q is one of a kind. It is fast at 72km/h and quite safe. I have done the full speed in a remote park. It flew like a marvel. Isabel K.

Where do I start about this drone? It flies long at 33 minutes, flies at high speed if you want and it is so well built such that it can withstand some abuse even from beginners. I have used this drone when I was away hiking in Europe in November 2018. Juan R.

I did try to use the camera for my photography business, but later decided to use it as backup only. I think it is great, but it will be the backup for me. Ivan Y.

This is my second month into this drone and all along, I have been using voice commands. I think it is worth it for the price and I would buy it again. Carlos R.

When I got this drone, I thought it was smaller than I had imagined it would be. However, when I started flying it, I realized there was nothing small to its features and there was certainly no limit to what it could do. Kel S.

I love this drone and I have out it to its extremities. However, I have found it impossible to get a spare battery. Beats me why Yuneec would make such a nice specimen and not have spare batteries for it. Tim W.

I graduated from flying a mini drone to this – big step to take, you might say. However, even after crashing it into a tree and breaking a propeller, I love it and I still think it can take a lot of abuse. Ernie P.
